Roughly one-third of all food produced for human consumption goes to waste, and when we say waste, we don’t just mean it doesn’t get eaten. Even after it is discarded food waste is not composted. Instead, it is more often than not, disposed of in ways that are actually harmful to the environment. Now while this is certainly a double whammy when it comes to wastefulness, at least food waste eventually biodegrades, unlike other materials. Plastic takes 1,000+ years to degrade and releases nasty chemicals into the environment in the process.
